The most important thing everyone should know about road accidents is that most road accidents are preventable through right precautions. Although a large number of road accidents are reported every year, the most important thing you need to know about road accidents is that they mainly occur due to the negligence or carelessness of the drivers. Therefore, the majority of the road accidents can be easily prevented by taking the right precautions. Before you start your vehicle, it is your duty to check whether the vehicle is in proper condition. You need to check brakes, including brake fluids and brake pedal. Next, headlights, brake lights and signal lights must be checked. You also need to check oil, water, battery, air and gas as well. These can be considered as “road essentials” which every driver should have before taking the vehicle out on the road. In addition, there are a number of on-the road- safety tips which can be useful in avoiding road accidents. Rule number one is that you have to make sure you do not surpass the speed limit. Always drive at or below the speed limit, even if the other vehicles pass you at a higher speed. It is also important to note that most road accidents occur due to the competition between the drivers to over take others. Therefore, unless you are in a hurry do not try to complete with the others if they overtake your vehicle. The next important rule is that you should try to avoid driving in bad weather. In rainy or snowy days, driving can be more difficult and the drivers are more prone to accidents. If you have to drive in bad weather, use wipers to clear the windshield. Dim your lights to make sure that the other drivers on the road see your vehicle. Use your horn to make the others aware of your vehicle particularly when you are in a blind corner or turning corner. When you drive in bad weather, always drive in a controllable speed. Use your signals properly even if there are no other vehicles around. Stay away from tailgating as well. Make sure there is always a sufficient gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front to avoid collision. Never drive when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You should also avoid travelling in vehicles when you know that the driver is drunk. Always keep in mind that drunk driving is one of the major causes of road accidents and if you are caught, the punishments can be severe. Always wear the seat belts. Concentrate on driving when you drive your vehicle, and make a habit of looking at your side mirrors and rear mirror. That way, you will be able to spot any potentially dangerous situations in advance and avoid those.
