Under New South Wales compensation law, those who cannot submit an accident notification form may be able to submit a personal injury claim form as an alternative. New South Wales compensation law allows the persons who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents to receive compensation by submitting either an Accident notification form or a personal injury claim form or both. The personal injury claim form must be preferred when the injured person has to incur medical and other expenses exceeding $ 5,000, when the injured person seeks types of benefits which are not available under Accident Notification form, when the vehicle which caused the accident cannot be found or when the injured person has failed to submit a accident notification form within 28 days of the accident. Under this method, the injured person is required to report the accident to the police and obtain the police event number for the accident. If possible, the registration number of the vehicle which caused the accident should also be found. However, where the registration number cannot be found after reasonable attempts or where the vehicle is uninsured, New South Wales compensation law allows the injured to lodge claim with the nominal defendant. Next, the insurer of the vehicle which caused the accident must be contacted to obtain the Green Slip and a personal injury claim form. However, the injured person can obtain the claim form from the New South Wales Motor Accidents Authority as well. A medical certificate from the doctor who is treating the injured person and a certificate of earning may also be required. After completing the personal injury claim from, it should be sent to the Green Slip insurer along with the other related documents and certificates, within six months of the date of the accident. The insurer will inform the injured person of the receipt of the notification and provide him with a claim number which should be used to refer to the claim in all correspondence. In addition the insurer will also provide additional information such as the name and the phone number of the officer who handles his claim. After investigating into the accident and injury the insurer will inform the injured person whether the liability is accepted, within three months of the receipt of the notification.
