The World Health Organization has declared that Australia is one of the countries where the highest rate of medical errors are recorded annually. A medical error may occur when the healthcare provider does not choose the best method of care in the circumstances or when the healthcare provider does not execute the method of care in the correct way. A medical error in this context is a preventable adverse effect of care, such as inaccurate or incomplete diagnosis or treatment of a disease. Around 18,000 persons are killed every year due to medical errors. Another 50,000 sustain permanent injury annually. 80,000 persons are hospitalized for treatment of different complications brought about by medical errors.
