There are three categories of traffic offences
Infringement offences – these include common offences such as parking and speeding offences
Minor driving offences – these include all offences, other than infringement offences, where the penalty does not include a prison term and the maximum fine is $2,000 or less.
Serious driving offences – all offences that could result in a prison term or that carry a fine of more than $2,000 are dealt with in the same way as other criminal charges. You’ll be summonsed to appear in the District Court. For more information see Info sheet Facing Criminal Charges.
