have worked for the last 17years in the same large company. Business is a bit slow due to the current economic climate. I've recently come off a large project and had 1 month of annual leave. I came back last week and have no bookable work to do. I'll use up the remainder of my annual leave over the Christmas/New Year break, but will have 4 weeks long service leave still available (got that in October). The lack of work will likely persist for a month or two, assuming we win proposals that we are putting in for work after that time.

My boss has advised that I consider using my long service leave - but I just had 4 weeks off and was hoping to use the long service leave later on for an extended holiday (not yet planned though). I expect that if I did this, I would still come back to a period of no work.

Our company has made people redundant over the course of the year, including a person that came off the same large project that I was working on.

Can they force me to use my leave?

Can they legitamately sack me for not using it? Or would/should this lead to a redundancy?

Does having my name of an proposal preclude me in some way from being made redundant? I would say no, because a proposal is not a guarantee of work, but am not aware of the technical legality details.

(I'm not entirely worried about being made redundant and hope they are not trying to avoid paying out a redundancy to me.)
