Errors in surgical procedures can also cause long term harm to the patient in certain situations. For instance, they may cause serious illnesses, permanent disability or even death. Surgical errors may occur in several ways. Sometimes the surgery can be performed in the wrong body part or organ. There are situations where the medical professionals have amputated the wrong limb by mistake. The surgery can be performed on the wrong patient. Use of unsanitary surgical instruments can also cause harm to the patient. During the surgery, other organs and tissues which are near the area where the surgery is performed can also be damaged. Another common type of surgical errors is nerve damage.
