The legal requirements to be a medical expert in a medical negligence case may differ from State to State. However, medical negligence cases which involve a certain medical field may require specialists in that particular medical field as medical experts. For instance, if the case involves dental negligence a qualified dentist may be required to give evidence. An expert may usually have a combination of academic and practical experience. If the medical negligence case does not relate to one particular medical field, an ordinary doctor may also be able to make give evidence.
