Healthcare providers are expected to act reasonably when they advise or give treatments to their patients. If they do not act reasonably and their acts or omissions cause injury to patients, the patients may be able to sue them and recover damages for medical negligence. In Bomam v Friern Hospital Management Committee (1957), it was decided that the healthcare providers should show a fair, reasonable and competent degree of skill, even though it is not expected that he should use the highest degree of skill.
