Lord Atkin, in his landmark decision in Donoghue v Stevenson, referred to Neihbour principle as an important aspect of law of negligence. In essence, Neihbour principle means that individuals should take reasonable care not to cause harm to others who may foreseeably be affected by their acts or omissions. Having its basis in the idea that “love thy neighbor” the neighbor principle was in fact first introduced by Francis Buller in his “An introduction to the Law relative to Trials at Nisi Prius. Lord Esher also made reference to this very idea in Heaven v Pender. However, it was Lord Atkin who first discussed the neighbor principle in clear and authoritative terms.
