When a healthcare provider such as a doctor, nurse, dentist, surgeon, pharmacist, or any other person deviates from the accepted standard of care when treating a patient and causes an injury to the patient, medical negligence occurs. Medical practitioners have a duty towards their patients to treat them in accordance with the accepted methods of care. They also have a duty to take every step to avoid foreseeable harm to the patients during the treatments. Medical negligence is part of tort law of professional negligence and is of utmost importance given the number of medical errors reported every year.
