Probate records which paper the handling of the estate all the way through the court, whether the deceased person died testate with a will or intestate without a will, can help to recognize where family members were live at the time, including those residing in other Australian states, or even back in other Countries.
There is no vital archive of wills in Australia. As an alternative, wills and probate registers are maintained by every Australian state, usually through the probate registry or probate office of the Court. A number of states have transferred their premature wills and probates, or provided copies, to the Public Record Office. Many Australian probate records have also been filmed by the Family History Library, but some of these are not allowed to be spread to Family History Centers.
