The Commonwealth minister responsible for administering the Australian Consumer laws has a major role to play when it comes to imposing bans. Only the Commonwealth minister can impose a permanent ban on a consumer good or service. A permanent ban is a ban that does not have a specific expiry date, so when such a ban is imposed it will last until it is revoked. A ban imposed by the Commonwealth minister is applicable across Australia. When imposing a new ban, the minister is required to notify it to the relevant supplier in writing. The notice of the ban should also be published on the internet. The minister is also required to give an opportunity to the suppliers to have a conference with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. However, this requirement can be dispensed with if there is an imminent danger to the public, caused by such good or service.
